Have you ever been in a funk? Or not even a funk but just kind of blah? I know I’m in a bit of a funk when I start eating a lot. Yes, I am an emotional eater. There, I admitted it. That’s half the battle right? Admitting to a problem? LOL Anyways, when I’m in front of my computer at night, writing or reading, or researching and I start eating an hour after dinner – fruit, chips, cereal, chocolate – that’s in one sitting y’all. I know, I have a problem. But this is my
first clue that something is bothering me. Times like this I take time to reflect on the good. This is purposeful, because it is sooooo easy to focus on the bad. Hey, speaking of focusing on the bad, let me ask you, have you ever done something and it went off well. You were pleased with the outcome and several people come up to you and congratulate you on a job well done and you try to be humble and smile and say thanks but in your head you’re thinking – Yeah [insert your name] shoot I did do good – LOL. Come on, you know you’ve been there! You are on a high! You’re up there! You are amongst the stars! You’re the man/woman!
Then there is that one person – negative nelly – who has to come and burst your euphoric bubble. She has a critique – which is fine, constructive criticism is always welcomed – but this is not constructive criticism. No, Miss Nelly, just wants you to feel as bad as she obviously does because she just does not know how to be happy. OR, she’s one of those people who does not like to see others happy. Whoever, this Nellie is for you, her words sting and stick. Whoever said sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me – LIED!!! Words sting man. Shoot. Throw a rock at me any day over some stinging words! (ok not literally but you get what I mean!)
Anyhoo, back to the story, the one negative remark amongst the many positive remarks somehow carries more lasting power and more weight. Hmmmm, why is that? If you think I’m going to answer this question – sorry – I’m asking you!!! However, I want you to take notice of something when you are feeling blah. When you focus on that one negative thing do other bad things just seem to start happening? It is true what they say “What you think about, you bring about”‘. When you think negative, more negative comes. When you think positive, more positive comes. A close and dear friend of mine tells me frequently, just let it roll off of you like water on a duck’s back. I’m sharing this piece of advice with you now. Whether cliché or not, don’t let negative words, comments, or people penetrate your outer layer. Let it roll off like water on a duck’s back.
So, what does any of this have to do with being in a funk? I was going down one path and ended up somewhere else. I guess someone just needed a reminder of these words today. But you know what? Be mindful of the words your are telling yourself when you are feeling “blah”. It’s likely that you’re beating yourself up for something that you really don’t need to beat yourself up over. I know I tell you this often, but I really do mean it – you are so very special and have so much to give that only YOU can give. You are unique. YOU ARE UNIQUE!! Let me say it again – You are unique!! It’s important to note that out of the billions of people on this Earth, there is only one you. Only you can offer what it is God put in you to offer. So kick off the funky feelings and put on a smile. Look at yourself smiling. Then start laughing. Instant remedy to feel better.
Ok, I’m out for today, but remember, if you just believe in yourself and be the best you that you can be today, the sky is the limit for you my friend.
Believe in you,
