Happy Friday!!! This week we received a question that so many of us have to answer – How do you manage being a single parent? My response – What’s the alternative? When you have to do something, you have to do it – it’s just that simple. Personally, I am very fortunate in that I have a tremendous support system of friends and family. If it were not for this support network I could not do all that I do with regards to work, my business, or my community work. For those of you who are not as fortunate to have a support network to help you out with even just getting a 30 minute break, may I suggest looking into programs like Single Women in Motherhood (S.W.I.M.)? They are an organized support network here in London, ON that helps single mamas with various issues like how to get back into the work force; babysitting; various self improvement courses etc… Asking for help is a sign of strength. There is an old saying about raising kids – it takes a village to raise a child. Raising a child in isolation can be very difficult. In my opinion, in order to be the best parent you can be – you need to take time for yourself to recharge. Expand that network. You and your child(ren) will be better for it.
Just a word of encouragement to all single parents – You are not alone. You can do this. It’s ok to be tired. Love yourself as much as you love your child. You are vital to your child and to so many other people in your life. If ever you feel like giving up try taking a deep breath and know that whatever you are going through – it will pass. According to physicists, change is the one constant we can rely on in this world – lol. You can do this. Believe in you. Remember this when you are feeling particularly down – when you see someone smiling at you, it is inevitable that you smile back. When you smile, your body naturally releases those good hormones that make you feel better. Sooooooooo, carry a compact mirror around with you. When you feel down, take it out and smile big and hard. Seems funny but you know what? It works!!!! You may even start laughing. You can do this! YOU CAN!!
Friday is a day dedicated to you. Send in your questions, funny stories, life lessons, and/or words of encouragement for our readers. This is YOUR DAY!! Soon we will have featured guests on Fridays from all walks of life so be sure to come back and visit.
Believing in You,
